Thirty Days of Photographs: Music

Today’s theme is music, and if I write one more post about how much I love music and love to play the piano, I might barf all over the keyboard. So instead I thought, since yesterday was all about my sister, why not make today all about my brother. My brother is a handsome young man of 15 years. He’s a foot taller than I am, smells faintly of motor oil, and has calluses on his fingers from playing the bass so much.

My brother is more gifted musically than I’ve ever been. He started by playing the piano, did it just long enough to become a better pianist than me, then decided it was too boring and switched to playing the bass, then the guitar and lately, the mandolin. He’s a natural, can play anything by ear and continues to awe his bass teacher and anyone willing to listen to him play.

I’m extremely proud of my brother, and I know that he’ll make it big one day. I took this picture at our lake house in the archipelago last weekend. There was a storm heading our way, you could feel it in the air, the water was choppy and the wind blowing hard. Anton sat in a rocking chair on the porch with an old beat-up guitar in his lap, and played beautiful music, accompanied by the thunder in the distance.

I love you, little brother. Oh, and I forgot to ask earlier, do you and Wiki want to come see the new Harry Potter movie with me and M? *

  1. This brought tears to my eyes!  What a stunningly beautiful post!  Anton sounds amazing and the photo of his beautiful hands on that instrument just overwhelms me.  I want to go see Harry Potter with the three of you!!!

  2. I'm jealous of your brother's talent, and yours. I like the intimacy of this photograph, and I see that he's playing a classical guitar, although it appears to have a narrow neck. Maybe it's a 3/4-sized travelling guitar. Anyway, I'm glad people still do play classical guitars, because the sound of them is very different from electric guitars and steel-string acoustics. They demand respect and skill, and they represent the birth of the instrument.

By the way, your description of your brother is brilliant.

Also, what's time is the movie? I'll buy the popcorn and soda if you, M, your brother and Wiki don't mind me tagging along. I don't anything about Harry Potter, though, so you might have to answer a few hundred questions while we watch the show.

  3. I'm so glad you liked the picture and my little homage to the best brother ever. You should definitely come with us to the movies, I'll save a seat for you!

  4. You're such a silly man, Mike. You're a great guitar player and don't need to be jealous of anyone's talent. And unlike me, you know a little something about guitars. See, you got all that from that picture, I would say something like "it appears he's playing a guitar. Or maybe a ukulele. Or a flute."

Oh yes, please tag along! Now, about Herry Potter, let's start from the beggining. Harry Potter is a young boy who is soon to find out that he's actually a wizard. I know, crazy, isn't it? He always knew he was special, and he had this weird scar on his forehead that.................. *ten hours later*.......and then "You Know Who" shows up, just like that! And he kills Cederic! Who, by the way, is played by Robert Pattinson. I'm totally Team Edward. And Harry takes his wand and..Mike? Mike? Why did you run screaming from me?

  5. You know, if I keep telling you how amazing you are, I'm afraid you're going to get a big head. So I'm not going to tell you that this is a beautiful picture and a sweet, loving, wonderful post. I'm not going to tell you how brilliant you are.

    And you can't make me.

  6. Hey, what kinda name is Wiki, anyway? Is he/she incredibly knowledgeable, like Wikipedia? 'Cause it would be extremely handy to have a boyfriend/girlfriend like that. Also, a little humiliating, unless your musical talent made up for your relative stupidity.

  7. Yes, she can, and you know it. All she has to do is invite you over for a pillow fight and you'll be like, "Oh, Ziva, you're so amazing and talented and pretty! I want to marry you and have your wonderfully talented and awesome babies, even if that's technically impossible, probably." Don't be coy, Nicky.

  11. *hangs head in shame*

    You're right, dammit.

  12. Don't oppress Nicky, Mike! Suppose we agree that she can't actually have babies, Ziva not having a penis -- which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans' -- but that she can have the right to have babies.

  13. Lovely post, Ziva, and a lovely photo.

  14. Oh yes, I'm very proud. And suitably jealous of his talent. ;)

  16. Wiki is short for the very beautiful name Wiktoria. I don't know her very well yet, but I'm sure she's at least as knowledgeable as Wikipedia.

  17. Next to you, of course. You'll be there, right?

  18.  Oh Nicky, honey, do you want to come over for a pillow fight?
